Ghana Institute of Journalism reduced Koforidua Polytechnic to mere spectators and dumped them out of the 'KNOWING AFRICA' quiz challenge stealing the entire show with style to set a new record in the competition.

To say Kof-Tech were mesmerised would be an understatement. They were subjected to pure intellectual humiliation, thought the book lesson and afterwards booed off their swags.

The contest started on a pulsating note with opponents for the afternoon putting in some strong challenge in the early stage but they were to fall back later. The usual brilliance of the 'Critical' Michael Ohene was ever present while Jonny Wisdom went about business with pinpointing intellectual prowesstry.

As the challenge gathered momentum, it was time for the underdogs to put to at their place and there was no difficulty in doing that- splendid display- 147 to 62 points.

"Obviously we look forward to clinching the final glory but what is important to us now is to destroy University of Ghana. We have watched them through out the competition and we know their strength." Michael told SC after the grand victory at the TV Africa premises.

"We are not underrating them, we will give them a good challenge."

With University of Ghana around the corner for the semis, Jonny is all geared up after the win and looks forward to a crunching semis.

"Its a good win, am always there to jubilate after every win but this one will be short because our real test come in the semis. Leg is no ordinary side so we really 'gat' to prepare."

The ultimate booty is a trip to the land of Pharaohs and 'lapy'.

GIJ fired themselves to the next stage of the KNOWAFRICA QUIZ after crashing intellectual minnows Ghana Institute of Languages 80 to 49.5 points.

Duo Michael Ohene Aboagye and Wisdom Jonny-Nuekpe were in their elements on Thursday afternoon at the TV Africa Studio as they summed up GIL to a kneeing disgrace.  

To say the pair were superb would be an understatement as they exhibited pure academic strength in the five rounder to dispatch their seemingly disappointed opposition.

Drink deep, or taste not the wine of intellectual prowesstry. They have drunk deep and what is most amazing is that they are still seriously on their mettle.

"We are leaving no stone unturned, the opposition were no pushovers but we manage to cruise to victory. We have about three weeks to make preparations for the upcoming contest and we are going to read like crazy." Wisdom beaming with joy and confidence told Standardcommunications.

"We need to beef up on the sports." Michael added

Arsenal’s Ghanaian-born striker Zak Ansah has been handed a call to play for England in a four-day tournament in Lincolnshire which starts on Wednesday according to the club's website.

Ansah, 15, has been a subject of controversy at the North London side after he declared his support for rivals Manchester United.

But that not withstanding, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made good remarks about the lethal forward and has likened him to Wayne Rooney of Manchester United.

The Young Lions coach John Peacock picked the 170cm-tall youngster to be a component of his attack that face Australia, Portugal and Turkey in the tournament.

Zak’s father, Andy was a professional footballer.

Berekum Police to boycott Premier League

Police in Berekum say they cannot provide security at the Golden City Park for the new  Ghana Premier League season due to the irate behaviour of fans of home team Arsenals. 

The Golden City ground as been an intimidated venue for many teams in the top flight with fans and officials of visiting teams being subjected to harsh treatments.

ACP Gyinaye confirmed to an Accra-based radio station Asempa FM the police will withdraw their service.
“From last season when the other ACP was around, there were reports about the behaviour of fans at the stadium. We talked to the club to talk to their supporters but nothing has changed since then and we are not happy about this.

“We think they are not making our job smooth so we are calling time on our work at the stadium until further notice.”

However, management of Arsenals have rubbished the claims and described it as untrue.

Former Ghana star Mohammed Ahmed Polo has told Standardcommunications.blogspot.com that he is deeply worried by the performance of the Black Stars in their recent friendly games.

Polo, one of Ghana’s soccer legends tagged dribbling magician is peeved after watching the Stars' poor show in the Soccer City Stadium yesterday in an international friendly.

“You see, it is very disturbing to watch how players played in yesterday’s game. They played as if there was nothing at stake. But the FIFA ranking will be in next month and we will be pushed down the ladder, considering the fact that a team below us has beaten us.”

“For sometime now, if you look at friendly games that we have been playing, it is very pathetic. Before the World Cup, we did a similar thing against Bosnia, Holland and even Latvia giving very little hope that we can perform at the World Cup. But we did well.”

“It high time we lifted up our performance in friendly. The South Africans took the game like it was the World Cup finals and you can see we were not serious.”

“We must approach each and every game whether friendly or competitive to prove our credentials.”

Two Premiership sides have expressed interest in Ghana World Cup star Kevin-Prince Boateng according to the player’s agent.

Talks between Genoa and Portsmouth have reportedly broken down and a possible move to Italy seems to have hit the rock.

Mario Miele Boateng’s agent told lalaziosiamonoi.it that Portsmouth demand for a higher sign on fee has stalled the move.

"Until a few days ago there was constant dialogue and everything seemed to be coming towards a conclusion, although Portsmouth were still asking for more. Since then everything has reached deadlock.”


This has opened the gate for other suitors to jump in on the 23-year-old and Mario Miele revealed that Liverpool, Everton and Besiktas are lining up a deal for Boateng.

"A few days ago I heard that Liverpool and Everton were keen, and also Besiktas. Today I have read that Stoke are interested”

But Mario added that there is nothing about these yet.

“But I know nothing about that and any of the clubs can have Boateng”

MAINZ O5 SNAP UP ADIYIAH ON LOAN

Newly promoted German Bundesliga I side Mainz O5 have acquired Ghana youth international Dominic Adiyiah on a season term loan according to reports in the local media. 

Adiyiah joined the Italian giants in October last year after impressive display at the World Youth Championship in Egypt. But has endured a turbulent season last season in which he played only a game for the Rossoneri and netted twice.

AC Milan have loaned out Adiyiah to newly promoted German side Mainz O5 after securing Olympique Lyon striker Hartem Ben Arfa.

Adiyiah is expected to have much playing time in the Bundesliga with Mainz O5.

U-20 QUALIFIER: GHANA 4-0 NAMIBIA-MATCH REPORT

 World Youth champions, Ghana, begun their campaign with a 4-0 drubbing of minnows Namibia at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.

It was an action-packed game as strikers Mahatma Otoo and Frank Acheampong with midfielder Abdul Aziz Yusif got the goals for Coach Orlando Wellington's Satellites.

 Skipper Mahatma Otoo headed home a Frank Acheampong's cross under two minutes. King Faisal's Frank Opoku Acheampong the architect of the first goal, added the second on the sixteenth minute.

Substitute Abdul Razak Yusif got the third with his first touch and Frank Acheampong snatched a personal brace midway through the second half.

The Satellites went into the game with the success of their predecessors at the back of their minds. Few though, expectations were high from the fans that thronged the stadium that hosted a national team game way back last year.

Coach Orlando fielded a team that included very few graduates from the unsuccessful U-17 side two year ago. France-based Kwame Nsor, goalkeeper Ben Acheampong, Abdul Aziz Yusif were the only players handed a starting role from that team. Talented Aaron Amoah watched proceedings from the bench until he came on later as a sub.

Genoa striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom and James Bissue from Israel were among the starters. Hearts of Oaks' Karim Alhassan partnered Bright Addae in defence.

The game started amidst hot-scorching sun but that was not a deterrent for a prospective and a more talented side hungry for success.

 It was Mahatma Otoo who had the first real opportunity in the game. The skipper fired well but his shot deflected an opponent and the resulting spill was skied by Kwame Nsor. A strong wind they say is a recipe for rain. The Namibians had very little time to settle before their weakness was exposed.

Enoch Ebo Andoh a member from last year's successful squad drilled his way through the Namibians back line, located Frank Acheampong who delivered a well tailored cross for Mahatma to curl with his head to the top right corner of the net.

Our visitors sensing the danger ahead, withdrew men back and tightened their defence. Coach Orlando assigned Boakye a midfield role and moved Nsor to the left flanks. It took barely a quarter of an hour for another goal to be registered.

Another header, but this time from the left. Ebo Andoh produced some wizardry down the wings. He teased three defenders and sent in a lofty cross for his team-mate at club level to knock home the second goal.

Twice behind in just twenty minutes, Namibia opened up the game searching for a goal to half the deficit. Their limit however was in the midfield as they rarely threatened the goal area of the Ghanaians. In fact they did that on only two occasions in the first half.

The first one was a feeble shot that Ben Acheampong grabbed with basic goalkeeping skill. The second time was an infringement on Ben Acheampong.

There was very little action to report for the rest of the first half as the Satellites attack seem to have broken down. Kwame Nsor was far less than conformable on the left side of attack. And Boakye's positioning in the midfield further weakened the attack and injected some confidence into the visitors' backline.

Osman Tall, the Senegalese match official was the talk of the second half as supporters unhappy with some of his decisions booed him. Even to the point of hurling sacked water at his assistant referee.

Mahatma had his header ruled offside on the 68th minute. Karim Alhassan delivered a thunderous free kick from thirty yards which the Namibian goalie's best was to parry. His effort bounced and fell on the way of the onrushing Mahatma who together with Frank Acheampong and Richmond Boakye were offside, headed the ball into the yawning net. But the linesman had other ideas as celebrations were cut short.

Wellington pulled out the all running James Bissue and brought on Abdul Aziz whose first touch was nothing but a header to send the fans to their feet in jubilation. A corner from the left, a neat header and a goal. Aziz's header was initially denied by the goal poles. It bounced against a confused defender and in the head of a nervy goalie, crossed the line for the third.

Coach Orlando infected the next substitution moments later. Brought on the talented Aaron Amoah for Richmond Boakye much to the displeasure of the about 20,000 supporters who preferred a tired-looking Nsor to take a rest.

On the 81st minute, the fourth and the final goal arrived. It was a corner from the right. Well delivered and well cracked in by Acheampong. 4-0.

There was little time for the Ghanaians to add the fifth as  the Namibians seemed content with the scoreline. They passed the ball among themselves well for the remaining minutes.

Mahatma fired wide in time added on.

Fans left the stadium satisfied with the teams performance but missed the another Ayew who was not allowed to report for national duty.

CHELSEA SUFFER FIRST PRE-SEASON DEFEAT UNDER ESS LEADERSHIP

 Michael Essien captained a youthful Chelsea to their first defeat in the pre-season as they lost 3-1 to full strength Ajax Amsterdam at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Le Bison played his first game for the Blues in six months in a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Underhill on Saturday.

Chelsea went into the game with only John Mikel Obi and Michael Essien as members from the regular side. Ross Turnbull stepped in for the injured Petr Cech while 18-year-old Jeffery Bruma occupied the vacated slot left by Brazilian centre-half  Alex.

Chelsea dominated play from the start and looked comfortable in the driving seat. However, a wicked deflection gifted the home side the lead just after six minutes. A Christian Eriksen's cross from the right deflected the unfortunate Jeffery Bruma and went past Turnbull for the opener.

The Blues responded in a rather more calm fashion.  It took more patience and perspicacity for the visitors to grab the equaliser.  Franco Di Santo received a well tailored pass from Mikel in the Ajax goal area after 25 minutes. The Argentine was outmuscled in a challenge but the ball luckily fell on the path of the onrushing Daniel Sturridge whose first time left footer evaded World Cup silver winning goalie Maarten Stekelenburg, 1-1 the scoreline.

The travelling fans’ cheers were shot live as an unpardonable error on the side of Turnbull put the host back into the lead on the 27th minute.  The former Aston Villa goalie failed to gather a long shot from his counterpart in the Ajax goal. The ball squirmed loose, leaving Siem De Jong to slot home into the empty net.

Martin Jol’s side penchant for beautiful passing game was in full flare as the Blues struggle to make an impact for the rest of the game.

The second half was quiet and uneventful. Essien the captain for the day was subbed on the 73rd minute as Jack Cork entered the fray.

Just when all seem to be gathering to a close, a young Korean deepened the woes of the frustrated Chelsea. Hyun Jun Suk slide home a Daley Blind's low cross to clinch a 3-1 win for Ajax.

There was little for Chelsea to make an impact as the match official brought proceedings to a close. Chelsea’s international pre-season tour sees them visit Frankfurt on Sunday August 1 to resume preparations for the coming season.

DIDIER DESCHAMP: JORDAN AND ANDRE ARE TOO IMPORTANT

Olympique Marseille Boss Didier Deschamps had put all speculations about Andre Ayew's future with the club to rest by telling potential suitors for the that Andre Ayew is very important for his workforce at the Stade Vedrome alongside his junior brother Jordan Ayew.


Jordan Ayew participated fully during friendly matches and Andre Ayew returned from a very successful World Cup.  Deschamps believes the two brothers have been very impressive and will play vital roles in OM's campaign this season.


"They are here with us. Jordan has been here from the start. He has not been too fast but it is a pleasant surprise for us. He made a very good preparation and he is very available with many qualities." he said of Jordan Ayew


"They are training at the club. Andre has perhaps lost a little time on the floor below but he is now preparing with us" he continued

"Dede is less a surprise, we had followed last year and with the World Cup and we have seen his qualities."

"They are two players that will be important in the workforce" 




Jordan Ayew has been denied the chance to make his much awaited debut for Ghana's U-20 side over the weekend and Andre Ayew's possible switch away from the club appears to be stifled.

AMOAH BACKS SUAREZ

 Ghana striker Mathew Amoah has jumped into the defense of Uruguay international Luiz Suarez saying he would have done same for Ghana.

Suarez has come under international persecution after he denied Ghana an historic victory after he used his hand to prevent a goal-bound header from AC Milan youngster Dominic Adiyiah in South Africa in the dying embers of their quarter-final clash at the Soccer City Stadium.

However, the NAC Breda forward who saw very little action in South Africa told a Dutch newspaper after arriving in Holland that he would have done same to push Ghana through to the semis had he be in Suarez’s shoes.

"A lot of people have asked me whether I'm angry with Suarez, but I'm not. I perfectly understand what he did and I would probably have done the same," told Dutch newspaper BN/De Stem.

"We can only blame ourselves for not converting the spot kick [Asamoah Gyan missed after Suarez had been sent off]. That's the reason why we didn't make it to the semi-finals."

The NAC Breda hitman also told the newspaper that he is more than satisfied with the general performance of the team and the reception given to the Black Stars.

"I'm very proud with what we achieved in South Africa. We've made a lot of people very happy by reaching the quarter-finals. We were received like heroes when we returned to Ghana. That was an amazing experience."

Amoah was an unused substitute in most of Ghana’s matches at the mundial.

ESS RETURNS WITH A MAGIC TOUCH

Chelsea begun their pre-season campaign on Saturday at Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win over their host.

It was Michael Essien who netted the winner in the second half.

Essien has not been in Chelsea jersey since December last year due to what Chelsea team doctors describe as a complicated surgery problems.

With most of the world cup stars still to report for pre-season camping, Boss Carlo Ancelotti handed starting role to most of his younger players while he welcomed from injury John Mikel Obi and Michael Essien. Petr Cech took over the captaincy from John Terry.

Both Chelsea and Essien geared into a brighter start. Youngster Josh McEachran played Essien through with a cross before twenty minutes but the Ghanaian headed wide.

Essien came very close and even more closer on the 27th minute. His half volley rattled the crossbar, a goal that could have been rated better than the Champions League goal against Barcelona.

Essien took the armband after 31 minutes when Ross Turnbull came on for Petr Cech.

It was Essien who put the Blues into the lead on 58 minutes. He curled a low drive into the bottom corner of the net after wonderful from McEachran and Sturridge.

However, that was his last action in the game as manager Ancelotti replaced him with Conor Clifford on the hour mark.

Essien’s next pre-season test with Chelsea is against Ajax Amsterdam in six days time.

BREAKING NEWS: EGYPT AND GHANA DOMINATE LATEST FIFA RANKING

Ghana has been ranked the world's 23rd best football nation in the latest Coca-Cola World Ranking release by FIFA.

The Black Stars were ranked 32nd last month before the World Cup finals in South Africa but has made giant strides to move nine places up the ladder.

Ghana was ranked ahead Mexico, Ivory Coast, Denmark, Nigeria and Slovakia.

Ghana placed 7th out of 32 countries that participated in the just ended FIFA World Cup but placed 23rd out of 202 countries affiliated to FIFA.

African champions Egypt beat Ghana to the first place on the continent and managed a ninth position on the World ranking. Egypt amassed 1053 points as against Ghana's 874.

Cote d'Ivoire which placed third on the continent have 843 points while Nigeria dropped nine places on the world ranking followed Cote d'Ivoire.

Cameroon are ranked 7th while South Africa which hosted the mundial made 17 strides on the world ranking and placed 12th on the log of 52 countries.

Central African Republic is first from the bottom with no point.

Spain has toppled five time world champions Brazil to the first place while the Netherlands have also pushed the Seleção further down the ladder to third place. 

Ghana was ranked 16th after the Germany 2006 world cup four years ago when they were eliminated in the round of sixteen stage.

DAANY'S STARS RED HERRING-MY LITTLE SENSE MAY BE A SWEET-BITTER BILE

 The game's pundits are still on a mission to unravel the mystery behind the big name failure to live up to expectations at the world cup.

Tactical formations and styles of play have undergone huge chastisement from former players of national teams and top football analysts.

Chief among them, Johan Cruyff- a former dutch superstar.

A member of the 1974 dutch squad, Cruyff has criticised his countryman Bert Van Marwijk's system on the pitch and labeled it as untypical of the total football displayed by a genius dutch squad in 1974 and 1978.

Well, that is very much at the team's level.

FIFA and other tournament organisers also have their concerns. WHY did Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Wayne Rodney, Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres could not live up to the billing?

Well, various opinions and views have been expressed and blames distributed around.

On Saturday, the night before the grand finale,  Danny Jordaan the chairman of the LOC, ditched out blames to what he presumably describes as an over ambitious organisers in Europe.

Stars in the Premiership participate in five major competitions in just a single season. With the premier league aside, players from Manchester United have to compete in UEFA Champions League, Carling Cup and the FA Cup. To top it all, there is the pressure incensed Community Shield which is played to officially usher in a new premier league season.

This means Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are obliged to play in four different championships in a season. Those who use their junior squad to honour the tournament are regarded as fellas who do not hold a competition at heart and want to reduce its significance.

In France, there is Coupe de France apart from the Ligue one and UEFA Champions League action for Lyon, Marseille and maybe Bordeaux. Europa League for Rennes, PSG, Monaco and probably out of sort St. Etienne.

Germany which is one of the countries observers admit has a well structured system in terms of organisation, get their stars to play in three domestic competitions with the Champions League and Europa League still not mentioned.

 Italy is no different. They also suffer a similar fate. Reigning Scudetto lords Inter Milan took part in four different competition and emerged victorious in an unprecedented treble.

    Jordaan believes that for the stars to appear in Brazil refreshed and prepared for the globe's biggest football showdown, there is should be an urgent consideration for a cut in the number of competitions players take part in a season.

Danny has every reason to be worried.

His country hosted a tournament which Lionel Messi struggled to dribble three defenders on a roll, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal that is described as a windfall.

Didier Drogba vanished from the scene despite scoring a cheeky goal against Brazil. I have even forgotten that a certain Kaka was part of a shameful Brazilian side that crashed out in the quarter-finals. Ronadinho may have helped them into the semis.

What about the English talisman? I laugh my head off when I read a column published by Thesun.co.uk from Terry Vernables.

The former English legend was referring to Manchester United's Wayne Rodney.May be he was echoing the truth to the British media to stop castigating Fabio Capello and manage the inflated image of their players.
Enough on Terry and his English fellas. My pauses tell me Terry is still thinking about the hell he has to go through watching the Germans gloated them out of Soccer City Stadium.

My view on this issue is a dire head-on-frontal collision with the LOC president. I think Danny is getting his points wrong.

Interestingly, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi,and Kaka played in the same league and system with Diego Forlan.

Real Madrid went trophiless last season meaning Cristiano Ronaldo had enough time to rest. Los Merenges were booted out of the CL by Olympique in the quarter-finals, got eliminated in the early stages of the Copa de Rey and struggled to perform in the La Liga.

Barcelona lifted the La Liga with Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandes, Pedro Hernandes and so on and so for.

Although Atletico Madrid finished in 9th position, played in the finals of the Europa League and proceeded to lift the trophy.

The success of Los Colchoneros last season was marshalled by Diego Forlan. 

If Oscar Tabarez is the composer of the new Uruguay symphony, Diego Forlan 
is the maestro of his orchestra. The

Forlan has been the contractor of South American football at the tournament.
An architect on the pitch and a designer of the new Uruguay fashion. 

A lot of players who flourished with their clubs last season have excelled in South Africa.

Welsey Sneijder helped Inter Milan to lift the UEFA Champions League and is a joint top scorer 
with David Villa. Arjen Robben has been as electrifying as usual and provided assist for his 
team-mates to convert. 

The former Chelsea and  Real Madrid man played in the Champions League finals, 
guided Bayern Munich to a DFB Pokal Cup glory and lifted the Bundesliga. 
Along was his national team-mate Mark Van Bommel, the first non-German captain
of the Bavarians. 

Although Barcelona could not achieve success in Europe last season
and defend the their Copa del Rey title, Pep Guardiola's side were well composed through 
the season. They beat cash-splashing Real Madrid to the La Liga title. 

Vicente Del Bosque is parading six of Barcelona's regular players in his starting eleven. 
Xavi and Iniesta have a strong penchant for the Spanish passing game. 

So what is making the chase for Danny Jordaan and Joseph Sepp Blatter? 

Maybe, just maybe soccer icons at club level are not mend for success at the World Cup. Of course 
this is not the first time stars have failed to glitter at the world. Can you remember Roberto Baggio.


The modern game is filled with players who rank personal success with clubs ahead of their national teams.

My little and common sense tells me that these stars are not committed enough for their national team as
compared to clubs.

I could not believe watching Lionel Messi struggle to dribble more than three players at the mundial. 
I starred in disbelieve as I crouched my jaw in my palms, watching Didier Drogba sky a golden opportunity 
my girlfriend could net with her eyes closed and Mr CR9 shooting wide from point blank range. 

So maybe Danny should concentrate on the commitment of these stars rather than chastising
various association to cut down the number of competition organised in a season
Unless Danny wants to tell us Diego Forlan is a superman from a different planet, with different DNA and genes.

AC MILAN CHASE GHANA STARLET

AC Milan are preparing a swoop for Genoa teenage striker Richmond Boakye Yiadom who surprised Italian football by becoming the first African import to score on debut.

 Newly appointed AC Milan Boss Maximiliano Allegri, believes the young Ghanaian has something to offer at the San Siro and looks to add him to the pool of young talents at his disposal.


But Genoa who still have the player under contract are keen to keep the 17-year-old at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris after he displayed sterling performances at the closing stages of last season.



FIFA player agent Oliver Arthur revealed to media men that AC Milan are preparing for talks with Genoa for a possible switch for the young prospect.

FIFA SET TO MAKE AMENDMENT TO GOAL DECISIONS

FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has confirmed in an interview with the BBC that the world's football regulatory body is considering making amendments to goal decisions. 

This year's FIFA World Cup has been reefed in controversy after major goal decisions and refereeing errors have decided the fate of title contenders England, USA, Ghana and Mexico. 

Ghana has been the latest to suffer such fate after Portuguese match official failed to allow goal when Uruguay striker Luis Suarez used his hand to prevent a Dominic Adiyiah goal bound effort. Asamoah Gyan stroke the cross bar in the eventual penalty awarded. 
  
The Ghana Football Association lunched an official appeal to FIFA to take a second look at its reluctance to the goal line technology. 

The FIFA general secretary said in an interview with the BBC that after witnessing England's painful exit from the tournament due to poor refereeing decision, his outfit decided to bid a consideration for an increase in the number of referee assistants and also introduce the goal line technology.

"We're talking about a goal not seen by the referee which is why we are talking about new technology," said Valcke

"Let's see if this system will help or whether giving the referee an additional four eyes will give him the comfort and make duty easier to perform," added Valcke.

"I would say that it is the final World Cup with the current refereeing system."

"The teams and the players are so strong and so fast. The game is different and the referees are older than all the players," said Valcke.

"The game is so fast, the ball is flying so quickly, we have to help them and we have to do something and that's why I say it is the last World Cup under the current system."

FIFA had earlier debunked calls for the introduction of the goal line technology claiming human errors are part of the game.

Whilst there is the lingering fear that Uruguay always flaps and flops on the big stage, you wouldn’t expect them to shy away from the veracity of getting into the semi-final of the World Cup on the backdrop of having the most potent of strikers in Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. Already naming their squad: “Maxi Pereira, Lugano, Victorino, Fucile; Alvaro Fernández, Diego Pérez, Arévalo Ríos; Diego Forlán; Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.”, it speaks volumes of their preparedness for the game. They’re leaving nothing to chance in their quest to take up their place on the soccer globe. Like the rest of the South American teams in this tournament, Uruguay has been highly impressive in South Africa, and has advanced to their first World Cup quarterfinal in 40 years. However, unlike the high scoring South American sides of Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay gets it done with stingy defense. Other than that though, keeper Fernando Muslera has been phenomenal, as he didn’t allow a single score in all of group play. GHANA TO APPEAL AYEW SUSPENSION

Ghana will appeal against the decision to show influential midfielder Andre Ayew the yellow card during Saturday’s 2-1 win over the United States at the World Cup, Ghanasoccernet can exclusively reveal.

The booking, which is Ayew’s second of the tournament, will rule him out of the quarter final clash with Uruguay on Friday.

The youngster was booked by referee Viktor Kassai of Hungary for a tackle on American striker Jose Altidore but television replays showed that he did not clip the player from behind.

But Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss Kwesi Nyantakyi says they want Fifa to rescind the decision because the referee got it wrong.

“We are going to Johannesburg where Fifa has its tournament headquarters to appeal the decision to show Ayew the yellow card,” Nyantakyi told Ghanasoccernet.com exclusively.

“We have noted that the decision taken by the referee was a hasty and unfair one and this will be the basis for our appeal.
“With the evidence we have from television replays we are confident that we will be successful with the appeal.”

Ayew’s absence will be a massive blow for the Black Stars as he is one of the key players for the team in the tournament in South Africa.

The son of legend Abedi Pele says he is delighted that the Ghana Football Association have decided to take up the booking with Fifa.

“I am happy that the Ghana FA chiefs want to pursue the booking with Fifa because it is the right thing to do,” Ayew told Ghanasoccernet exclusively.

“As you can see I didn’t injure the player or go with an intention to injure him so I will be very happy if Fifa looks into it.

“I will be very happy if I am available to help my country Ghana and Africa progress because the quarter final is a crucial stage of the World Cup.”

Ayew incurred the one-match suspension as a result of a stoppage time yellow card, shown after his feet entangled Jozy Altidore, sending the US forward to ground as he moved up-the-field with the ball.

Ghana will definitely miss defender Jonathan Mensah for the game against Uruguay as he was also given his booking of the tournament during the game against the United States.The Ghana FA will not appeal that decision.

The Black Stars have joined Cameroon and Senegal at the only African countries to have reached the quarter finals of the World Cup.

GIGYANTIC STRIKE PUTS GHANA IN QUARTER-FINALS

An extra-time strike from Asamoah Gyan secured a quarter-final berth for the Black Stars of Ghana against the Yankees of the USA.

Ghana opened the scoring through Kevin-Prince Boateng on the fifth minute and Landon Donovan slashed away the deficit through a spot kick.

Asamoah Gyan snatched the winner for the Ghanaians just after three minutes of regulation time.

The Black Stars started on a brighter note and dominated play right from the start of play. Kevin-Prince Boateng scored just after five minutes.

Kevin-Prince Boateng lashed onto an Asamoah Gyan pass, run out at four defenders before unleashing a powerful right foot low drive to beat Tim Howard in the USA goal.

The Ghanaians looked comfortable in the driving seat and outplayed the Yankees. Their midfield brought out the best of the USA defence men. Tim Howard pulled a superb save to denied Kwadwo Asamoah the doubler.

Kwadwo Asamoah again skied a glaring opportunity to put Ghana two nil up. The remainder of the first half was uneventful and the Hungarian match official brought proceedings to a close.

The Yankees took control of the second department and brought the game to their Ghanaian counterparts. Their midfield begun to click into gear putting more men forward. Jozy Altidore and Maurice Edu put John Mensah and Jonathan Mensah under pressure.

Donovan stormed forward freely, cheekily beating John Mensah before supplying the ball to Clint Dempsey who was hacked down by an uncertain Jonathan Mensah. Referee Kassai pointed to the spot, yellow carded Jonathan Mensah to put him out of the Stars' next game.

Landon Donovan, the man, stepped up to convert beautifully. He side-footed the ball to the extreme right sending a superb Kingson the wrong way.

After the equaliser, the game became an open for all affair with the USA unleashing more men into attack but the Ghanaians were able to contain the attack from  the Yankees. Matters worsened for the West Africans when Kevin-Prince Boateng, the engine for the team, was subbed after picking a knock.

Substantive captain Stephen Appiah was brought on by Milovan Rajevac to hold the midfield together. Hans Adu-Sarpei was also replaced by Lee Addy. This obviously injected more strength into the team as they came back strongly into the game.

Both teams proved little to show urgency in attack as the game headed for extra time.

Ghana powered themselves into the game and did not waste too many chances. Asamoah Gyan scrolled between two defenders to control an Andre Ayew's  45-yard pass with his chest, before unleashing a powerful half volley to beat an already committed on rushing Tim Howard. 2-1, Ghana up. A repeat of the what happened in 2006.

Andre Ayew, produced some wizardry down the flanks to kill the mocking birds off.

But the end, it was President Mills of Ghana who smiled deep into the night. Former President Bill Clint will join his men back home to Washington.

BREAKING NEWS- INKOOM HANDED DEBUT WORLD CUP START

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac has handed young defender Samuel Inkoom his first World Cup start when the Black Stars when they take on the United States on Saturday night.

The Swiss-based right back has been muscled out of the position because of the presence of experienced John Paintsil.

But with Prince Tagoe unimpressive in the right wing position, Inkoom has been brought in to take over the place.

Apart from that change, the Black Stars team will remain the same as the starting line-up that started against Germany in their last Group D game.

This means Inkoom will be alternating the position with Paintsil but he is expected to provide the crosses for the strikers in the game.

Ghana will qualify for the quarter finals of the World Cup if they manage to beat the United States on Saturday.
This means they will equal the African World Cup record set by Cameroon and Senegal who played in the quarter finals.

MENSAH RETURNS BUT VORSAH OUT

 

Milovan Rajevac has named defender John Mensah in his starting line-up to face Germany in tomorrow's Group D's final clash but Isaac Vorsah could not win the fitness test.

The pair missed the tie against the Socceroos of Australia on Saturday but returned to training on Sunday and John Mensah has been named in Ghana's first eleven in a dicey encounter with the Germans.

Vorsah who was hoping to recover before the clash has been ruled out and will not available for selection according to the team doctors. Youngster Jonathan Mensah who impressed in the Aussies' game is stepping in for the Vorsah.

The Black Stars looked shaky in defence against the Aussies but with the two returning, this will definitely put some sense of urgency into the defence of the Black Stars.

Ghana are just a point away from a causing one of the major upsets in the history of the world cup should they nick a draw and Serbia manage a win against Australia. This will mean the Germans face first round elimination.

But Ghana needs to very careful as the Germans are fully aware of the dangers of a loose or a draw.

Milovan Rajevac, the Ghana coach has named a squad that is no different from the one that defeated his homeland; Serbia in the opening game Group. AYEW SHAMES CRITICS

 The world Cup has always been the stage for the big names to flex muscles and show what they are made up of.

So it was supposed to be an arena for Sulley Muntari to justify the reason why he helped Inter Milan to that historic treble or Stephen Appiah to show the world the kind of experience he has acquired in the past years.

Well that has not proven to be so in this year's world cup. Cristiano Ronaldo is still struggling to impress after a poor showing in their group opener. Only Lionel Messi has so far done something little to prove his worth.
 
For Ghana, Sulley Muntari has been allowed a place on the bench while Stephen Appiah has done very little to convince Milovan Rajevac of a starting role.

Meaning there are always ways for new talents to emerge. One of such is Andre Ayew- the song of Ghana's soccer legend.

Andre Ayew put in a sterling show again for the Black Stars as they came from a goal down to nick a one-all draw with the socceroos of Australia.

The Arles man gained selection ahead of Inter Milan's Sulley Muntari in the first game and played impressively  to maintain his place in the Ghana starting line up for the game against Australia.

Just as many thought Kwadwo Asamoah was going to be Ghana's man for the tournament, Andre favourately referred to as 'Dede' just burst into the limelight and has become the main man for Ghana.

His pace, skill, resilience, relentlessness, tackle and teamwork has delighted the technical team and Ghanaians. He has become the toast for the travelling fans and Ghanaians back home.

For Ghana, the progress of the team to the next stage of the competition depends very much on Andre Ayew and his ability to torment the Germans on Wednesday.

Asamoah Gyan converted from the spot after Harry Kewell used his hand to deny Jonathan Mensah the leveler.

Brett Holman opened the score on the eleventh minute from a rebound after Richard Kingson failed to make a first time catch from a Mark Bresciano free kick.

The Black Stars clicked into gear after a poor start with fluid attacking football. Kevin-Prince Boateng and Anthony Annan combined well in midfield to help the Stars take control of the game after conceding an early goal.

Asamoah Gyan had most of efforts denied by the Aussies' Fulham goalie Mark Schwarzer. Kwadwo Asamoah fired wide from thirty yards. And Kevin-Prince Boateng also saw his 25-yard effort closely parried away by Schwarzer.

Hans Adu-Sarpei brought down Mark Bresciano in the Ghanaian half just after ten minutes. Bresciano sent in a lofty one with Kingson failing to make a first time save. Brett Holman emerged unmarked to put the ball at the right corner of the net to put the socceroos ahead.

Ghana picked up the pieces and worked more effectively in midfield. Andre combining well with Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The Ghanaians had an answer for their questions when Andre Ayew drilled his way through the Aussies defence.

The 19-year-old dribbled four defenders before sending a through pass for Jonathan Mensah to unleash a thunderbolt. But former Liverpool playmaker Harry Kewell blocked the ball with his hand and the Italian referee sent him for an early shower.
 
Gyan stepped up and sent Schwarzer the wrong way to defray the deficit.


With the socceroos down by a man, Pim Verbeek reshuffled his tactics and changed the formation. Milovan Rajevac edged his men on for the killer but the stubborn Aussies defence could not give in as they defended spiritedly.

Gyan had most of his efforts denied.

Milovan Rajevac has named the seventh youngest player in the South Africa 2010 World cup to replace injured John Mensah for the clashed with the socceroos of Australia this afternoon.

Jonathan Mensah who plays for FC Granada in Spain replaces Sunderland center-half John Mensah who is suffering from a recurrent back problem. 

  John Mensah and Isaac Vorsah who gelled in Ghana's opening triumph over Serbia both took injuries in training and will not be available for this afternoon's showdown.

However, the Serb gaffer has maintained all other players that started the first game with Sulley Muntari and substantive captain Stephen Appiah failing to nick a starting role.

The Black Stars are determined to down a team they have never won a game against. Milovan has maintained a formation he stuck to in the first game adhering to a one top formation.
